The “Trim-Phone” takes its nickname from its longer title, the Tone Ring Illuminator Model, although the svelte shape of the cradle and lightness of the base make it one of the slimmest and most stylish phones of that period. The Trim-Phone initially featured a rotary dial, introducing a push button keypad version later in the 1970’s. The original rotary dial glowed thanks to the element tritium, which inspired mild fear and greater curiosity among the British public. The phone was designed to be laid freely on a flat surface, which made it a fantastic choice for those people who enjoyed having a leisurely phone conversation, but could lead to the phone “slipping away” while people attempted to dial on it. The phone’s chief innovation was its electronic ringer, which replaced the older “warbling” ringers of previous telephones. The UK Post Office was the first major customer of the phone after it hit the market in the early 1960’s.
